yak wool

Yak wool

The yak is an animal that lives at high altitudes, in the Himalayas as on the plateau of Mongolia, and endures winters with very cold temperatures thanks to its multi-layered coat. While the outer coat is quite coarse, the undercoat is composed of an extremely refined wool: sheared and carded artfully, it produces very soft, light and very warm yarns of the highest quality.

Yarn care instructions

Washing: hand or machine wash, wool program (maximum 30 degrees).

Drying: lay flat, spin at low speed if necessary.

Ironing: You can iron yak wool at a suitable temperature.

Curiosities

For our yarns we use Mongolian yak wool, because Mongolian nomadic farmers are the best in shearing and carding the best part of the hair, called “khullu” in the local language: this is the secret to get the finest wool. In the long term, our goal is to enable a transfer of know-how between Mongolia and Nepal in order to produce the best quality yak wool in Nepal in the future.

While comparable in quality, yak wool is definitely more sustainable than chashmire because yaks, unlike pashmina goats, graze on grass without tearing out the roots. In this way they contribute to the maintenance of the precious grassland of the Mongolian highlands, which is increasingly at risk due to the advance of the desert where the goats graze.
