silk

Silk is obtained from the cocoon made by the larvae of the mulberry tree silkworm(Bombyx mori), also commonly called “silkworm”. The larva feeds on mulberry or oak leaves and produces its own silk cocoon thanks to special glands. The cocoon consists of a single continuous thread whose length ranges from 300 to 900 meters. At the end of this incredible weaving work, the caterpillar turns into a chrysalis and then into a butterfly. When the metamorphosis comes to an end, the adult insect gets out from the cocoon making a hole and secreting a substance which breaks the thread. For this reason, breeders commonly kill the chrysalises by immersing them in boiling water.

Sustainable silk or “peace silk

In order to avoid killing the silkworms, the ethical silk is processed only after the adult insects have left the cocoon. This type of production is complex and elaborate, which is why the costs are higher.

Respect for people and nature is at the heart of Wear With Ease‘s philosophy, so we only use sustainable silk produced in India.

Only natural colours certified by REACH are used for the dyeing process.
