Lokta Paper

Lokta Paper

In Nepal, Lokta paper has been used for official documents and religious texts for over 1000 years due to its resistance to tearing and moisture, which makes it very durable.

This paper is derived from the evergreen bushes of“Daphne spp.” that grow lush and wild in some regions of the Himalayas. Daphne bushes grow back to their original size in only 3 years after harvesting, which allows for sustainable exploitation of this resource.

The bark of the plant is boiled and then refined into a liquid mass, which is finally dried in the sun, spread out on wooden frames. It is still a totally manual workmanship, for a valuable final product.

Lokta paper craftsmanship, passed down from generation to generation, is a sustainable source of income for rural Nepal.
